The Brief
Uncle Jessy is a prolific content creator on social media. He’s a 3D print specialist, and makes replica props for all things pop culture. Go and check out his YouTube channel, it’s amazing.

He came to me looking for an upgrade to his old logo (which he never uses) to be used across his video content, business cards, website designs, media kit, etc.

Uncle Jessy is probably best-known for his Magneto helmet from X-Men. He uses it on his social profiles, but while that would make a great concept for a logo, we might run into some IP issues if we tried to trademark it.

The Solution
In researching 3D printing techniques for this logo, I noticed that Uncle Jessy champions resin 3D printing. This is where a design is ‘pulled’ from a vat of liquid resin while a UV light hardens each layer as it rises out of the liquid. When a design has areas that overhang and gravity would make the plastic fall, support structures are put in place to support the dangling material, which are then later removed.

Uncle Jessy’s logo is an extruded ‘J’ that if printed in this orientation would require support structures to fill the space. Those support structures make up the shape of a ‘U’, making the entire logo mark a ‘UJ’ acronym for ‘Uncle Jessy’.

I worked this concept up in colour using a lovely red-to-purple gradient, which is the colour grading that Uncle Jessy often uses in his videos, and would tie in with the Magneto helmet colour scheme. The design also has an additional layer of meaning, in that the design also resembles a magnet, again linking the Magneto theme.
